Please do not send your passphrase, your recovery code or the text of a note. We cannot use the first two and do not want the third. A screenshot with the note text hidden is fine.

Common questions

Most answers are already here.

For how to use the app, from your first note to every shortcut, read the guide.

The app says “Sync needs a plan”.
Your account exists but has no active subscription. Sign in on the account page to subscribe, or to check whether a payment failed. Your notes are still on the device either way.
The app signed me out and says my plan has ended.
The subscription ran out, or a payment failed and the grace period passed (3 days monthly, 14 days yearly). Nothing on the device was removed and the notes there are still editable. Renew on the account page, then sign in to the app again, and what you wrote in the meantime syncs.
What happens to my synced notes if I do not renew?
The encrypted copy on our servers is kept for at least 90 days after the plan ended, and may be deleted at any time after that. We email you 30 days and 7 days before it is deleted. Your sign-in account is kept and your devices are not touched, so subscribing again later uploads your notes again from a device that still has them.
I forgot my account password.
Use “Forgot password?” on the sign-in form. That resets the account password, which only controls who may sync. It cannot and does not touch your vault passphrase.
I forgot my vault passphrase.
Use your recovery code from the unlock screen: “Lost your passphrase? Use this code to set a new one.” If you have lost both, nobody can recover the synced notes, us included. Notes still open on a device that is unlocked can be exported from there. To use sync again, choose “Lost both? Start over with a new vault” on the unlock screen while signed in: it asks for your account password, erases the synced notes, and lets you create a new vault on the same account and plan.
A note shows as “Unreadable note” on a new device.
That device unlocked a different vault. Sign in first on a new device, so it pulls your existing key record, and only then unlock with your existing passphrase.
Where is my invoice?
Paddle emails one for every charge. You can also download all of them from the Paddle customer portal linked on the account page.
How do I cancel?
Account page → Manage subscription. Cancelling stops the next charge; sync keeps working to the end of the paid period.
Can my notes disappear without sync?
Yes. Without sync, this browser holds the only copy, and clearing browsing data deletes it. Some browsers also clear storage on their own, for example Safari when a site is not opened for a while. Install HushJot as an app and export a backup now and then (⌘J ⇧A); the app reminds you a few days in, then every 30 days. Sync is a second copy, not a backup, so the reminder shows on synced devices too.
Where are my notes stored?
On your device, encrypted, and if you sync, as the same ciphertext in Google Cloud Firestore in the United States. The security page lists exactly what is and is not readable there; the privacy policy has the legal detail.
My agent is not picking up my notes.
Check three things: the box at the end of the note is ticked; something is running the agent (/loop in Claude Code, or hushjot pending --wait); and the note is inside the folder you scoped. hushjot pending on the computer lists what is ready. The setup steps cover all three.
Leaving

Deleting your account

Email support@hushjot.com from the address the account is registered to, with the subject “Delete my HushJot account”. Because the sender of an email can be faked, we reply to that registered address and delete only once you confirm from it. We hold nothing else about you to check against.

Nothing on your own devices is touched: the notes there stay, encrypted, until you remove them from the app’s Account panel (“Remove all data from this device”, which offers an export first). Export before you write to us if you want to keep anything.

What happens once you confirm, within 30 days and usually the same day:

  1. Any active subscription is cancelled with Paddle, so nothing further is charged.
  2. Everything under your account on the server is deleted: notes, folders, versions, your key record, your plan record, and any links you published. Copies in our encrypted backups expire within 60 days, as the privacy policy says.
  3. Your sign-in account is deleted.
  4. Billing records that tax law requires us to keep are kept for that period with your account identifier removed.
  5. You get a reply saying it is done.
Status

When sync is down.

Your device never depends on it.

Sync depends on Google Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication. If sync stops for everyone, it will be posted at the top of this page. A device never loses access to its own notes when sync is down.
