Markdown cheat sheet. On two pages.

Every piece of Markdown you are likely to need, from headings and links to tables, footnotes and task lists. Each example has its result beside it, so you can see what you will get before you type it. Print it, pin it up, or keep it open in a tab.

On the left, what you type. On the right, what you get. Every result here was rendered by HushJot itself.

Questions

About Markdown, and this sheet.

What is Markdown?
A way to format writing with plain characters: # for a heading, ** for bold, - for a list. The text stays readable as it is, and any app that understands Markdown can show it formatted. It was created by John Gruber in 2004 and is now used almost everywhere people write: notes apps, GitHub, chat tools and documentation.
Will this work in other apps?
The basic syntax works almost everywhere. Tables, task lists and strikethrough come from GitHub Flavored Markdown and are widely supported too. The extended syntax (highlights, footnotes, definition lists, emoji names) and ```mermaid diagrams depend on the app, so check yours. Note links and tags are HushJot’s own.
Can I print it?
Yes. The PDF is two A4 pages, designed to print on white paper. It also prints well on US Letter at “fit to page”. Share it freely.
Where can I practise?
In HushJot, a private Markdown notepad that opens instantly in your browser. It shows your Markdown and the formatted result side by side, and works without an account. Your notes are end-to-end encrypted.

Write it, see it, keep it private.

Every example on this page works in HushJot, exactly as shown.
