Markdown line breaks. Why Enter isn’t enough.

In Markdown, pressing Enter once does not start a new line: the two lines join into one paragraph. Leave a blank line to start a new paragraph, or end a line with a backslash \ to break it without a gap.

New paragraphs and new lines

This line and this line are one paragraph.

Markdown treats a single line break as a space, so you can wrap long lines in the source.

A blank line starts a paragraph

This is the usual way: most writing is paragraphs.

A backslash breaks the line

For addresses, poems and lyrics: new lines without the gap between paragraphs.

Two spaces break it too

Two spaces at the end of a line work the same way, but you can’t see them, and editors often strip them. The backslash is safer.

Questions

Line breaks and paragraphs, answered.

How do I add a line break in Markdown?
End the line with a backslash \, or with two spaces, and press Enter. For a new paragraph, leave a blank line.
Why does Markdown ignore my line breaks?
By design: a single line break inside a paragraph counts as a space, so text can be wrapped in the source without changing the result.
Can I use <br>?
In apps that allow HTML, such as GitHub, yes. HushJot shows HTML as text and never runs it, so use a backslash there.
How do I add more space between paragraphs?
Markdown has no way to add extra blank lines; several blank lines count as one. A horizontal rule (---) is the usual way to mark a bigger break.
