HushJot

Markdown checkboxes. Task lists that tick.

Start a list item with [ ] for an empty box or [x] for a ticked one. In apps that support task lists, including HushJot, you can tick the box in the preview and the Markdown updates itself.

On the left, what you type. On the right, what you get. Every result here was rendered by HushJot itself.

Task lists

A task list

- [x] Book the venue
- [ ] Send invitations
- [ ] Order the cake
  • Book the venue
  • Send invitations
  • Order the cake

A dash, a space, the brackets, a space, then the task.

Numbered, and in capitals

1. [ ] Draft
2. [X] Review
  1. Draft
  2. Review

Numbered lists take boxes too, and [X] counts as ticked.

Nested tasks

- [ ] Launch
  - [x] Write the post
  - [ ] Record the video
  • Launch
    • Write the post
    • Record the video

Indent a task under another to break it into steps.

When a box doesn’t show

Common mistakes

  • The space inside the brackets matters: [ ], not [].
  • It has to be a list item: [ ] task on its own line, without a dash, is plain text.
  • Leave a space after the brackets: - [ ]task is not a box in most apps.

Ticking in HushJot

  • Click or tap a box in the preview to tick it.
  • In the editor, ⌘↵ (Ctrl↵ on Windows and Linux) ticks the task under the cursor.
  • ⌘⇧9 turns the selected lines into a task list.
Questions

Checkboxes and task lists, answered.

How do I make a checkbox in Markdown?
Start a list item with square brackets: - [ ] Task for an empty box and - [x] Task for a ticked one.
Why doesn’t my checkbox show?
Usually a missing space: it must be - [ ] task, with a space inside the brackets and after them, and it must be a list item.
Can I tick the boxes?
In apps with interactive task lists, yes. GitHub lets you tick them in issues and pull requests, and HushJot lets you tick them in the preview or with a shortcut.
